Open Access

Open Access

BMJ offers three options to make your research Gold Open Access:

Publish in The BMJ
The BMJ is our flagship international medical journal, committed to keeping research articles Open Access. To support this, all authors are asked to pay an article publishing charge (APC) of £3,000 (exclusive of VAT) on acceptance of their research paper. For more information, visit The BMJ's Open Access page.
Publish in one of our fully Open Access journals, such as BMJ Open
BMJ publishes a number of fully Open Access titles from BMJ Open, our first fully Open Access journal, to 10+ specialty Open Access titles. A full list including APCs (excluding VAT) can be found below.
•    BMJ Open - £1,350
•    BMJ Open Diabetes Research & Care - £1,700
•    BMJ Open Gastroenterology - £1,700

Publish in any of our remaining 50+ journals, using our Open Access option
The Open Access fee for publishing in most journals from BMJ is £1,950 (exclusive of VAT), apart from Frontline Gastroenterology and Acupuncture in Medicine, which have lower rates. Our Open Access option is available to any author publishing in a journal from BMJ; authors will be asked whether they wish to take up the option on acceptance of their article.

Compliance with funders' Open Access policies

All BMJ author agreements allow authors to comply with funder Open Access requirements as shown on the Sherpa/Juliet website. ROARMAP also allows you to search for Open Access policies by university, research institution and research funder.

In many cases, funders include Open Access fees or article publishing charges within the research grant or by block grants to institutions. Upon acceptance, authors will be given the option to pay a fee to make their article Open Access.

Where an Open Access fee is paid

Where an Open Access fee is not paid

Articles will be published in the usual way and remain behind access controls. The BMJ exclusive licence to publish complies with the SHERPA/RoMEO green Open Access policy and permits authors to comply with funders’ requirements, by allowing the final accepted manuscript (but not the final published version) to be self-archived in their institutional repository immediately after the online publication date. The final accepted manuscript (but not the final published version) can also be placed in PMC (including for deposit by PMC on its international mirror sites) after an embargo period of 12 months from the print publication date or, if not published in print, from being published online, unless otherwise stated by the Funding Body. The decision to accept an article is not influenced by the author’s ability to pay an article publishing charge.

Please note the above also applies to unfunded research.

Open Access Programme

A number of institutions have joined BMJ's Open Access Programme, which can either cover the whole cost of Open Access publishing for authors at participating institutions, or can allow authors to receive a discount off the article publishing charge (APC). If you would like to learn more about the programme, please visit our Information for Institutions page.

If you are a researcher at the following participating institutions, your APC may be reduced or fully covered through the programme. Please contact your librarian to obtain further information on how to receive a discount or publish free of charge.
