Open Access for institutions

BMJ is committed to keeping research articles open access and our Open Access solutions are now helping a growing number of institutions globally to drive their research output and reputation.

There are two Open Access options to help researchers at your institution to publish their work in leading, peer-reviewed journals at a reduced cost.

Choose the Open Access option that suits you

BMJ Open Access account

This is an advance payment system that allows institutions to deposit funds to cover the cost of Open Access publishing by their authors in any of BMJ’s journals. The article publishing charge (minus your 15% discount) is deducted from the account balance on acceptance of the article.

Benefits for institutions

  • Institutions decide how much to pay upfront (£10k minimum)
  • 15% discount is applied to APCs
  • Quarterly statements
  • Automatic reminders if/when an account top-up is required
  • Unused funds automatically roll over to following year
  • Streamlines the administration of your institution’s open access output
  • Authors pay nothing when they submit their manuscript

BMJ Open Access membership

Member institutions pay an annual fee (based on their Open Access output with BMJ journals in the previous year), which grants all authors at the institution a 25% discount on the article publishing charge (APC) when submitting to any BMJ published journal.

Benefits for institutions

  • Cost-effective Annual Membership fee
  • 25% discount on the article publishing charge (APC)
  • Bi-annual statements
  • Authors pay nothing when they submit their manuscript
